Privacy Policy
1. Introduction
We prioritize your privacy and want to be transparent about how we handle your data. This policy explains:
- What data we don't collect.
- How the optional Last.fm login works.
- How we store, secure, and retain your information.
2. Data We Don't Collect
Groove does not collect, store, or share the following:
- Your name, email address, or other contact information.
- Your precise location or device identifiers.
- Usage analytics, crash reports, or third-party tracking data.
We do not use third-party analytics tools, ads, or tracking technologies.
3. Third-Party Services
What Data Is Shared with Last.fm?
When you connect Groove to Last.fm, Last.fm may collect data as part of their service (for example, your Last.fm username and listening/scrobble data). For details, see Last.fm's privacy policy.
What Data Is Shared with Discogs?
Groove sends only the artist name and album title from your library to Discogs to retrieve artist photos. We do not send any personal identifiers or device IDs. You can disable this feature by turning off "Download Artist Images" in Settings.
4. Data Retention
What Data Does Groove Access or Store?
- Listening History: Groove keeps a local log of your listening history for personal stats and planned features. This data is private on your device and is not transmitted to our servers (because we do not operate any).
- Session Key: If you authorize Groove with Last.fm, Last.fm provides a session key (a persistent token used to authenticate requests). This token is not your Last.fm username or password. The token remains valid until you revoke it by logging out in Groove or from your Last.fm account settings.
- Discogs Queries: When retrieving artist photos, Groove only sends the artist name and album title. These queries do not include user-identifying data.
5. No Servers or Remote Storage
Groove does not run servers or store user data on our own infrastructure. All data created and stored by the app remains on your device unless you explicitly connect to a third-party service. When you use Last.fm, your device connects directly to Last.fm's servers.
By default, Groove will also query Discogs to retrieve artist photos. These queries send only the artist name and album title and do not include personal identifiers. You can opt out of Discogs lookups at any time by disabling "Download Artist Images" in Settings. Groove does not proxy, collect, or retain those requests on any server we control.
6. Data Storage, Retention & Security
- Keychain Storage: Your Last.fm auth token and session key are stored in the Apple system keychain, which is designed to protect sensitive information like passwords and tokens.
- Backups: Depending on your device and backup settings, keychain items and other local data may be included in device backups (for example, iCloud or local backups).
- Encryption in Transit: All communications with Last.fm and Discogs use HTTPS/TLS.
- Data Retention: Listening history and metadata are kept locally on your device. If you request deletion (see below), we will remove local data where technically possible. Data cached by third parties (e.g., Last.fm) is outside Groove's control.
7. Apple App Store
Groove is available exclusively on the Apple App Store. By downloading the app, you agree to Apple's App Store privacy guidelines, which govern how Apple handles app distribution and related device info.
Note: Apple may collect basic device information to facilitate downloads; that data is handled by Apple, not Groove.
8. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes in our practices or legal requirements. The effective date and change log are below:
- March 9, 2026 - First published.
